What is spark erosion?

Spark erosion is where an electric spark between 8-12 thousand degrees Celsius is created between an electrode (cutting tool) and the work piece effectively ‘vaporising’ the material to create the required design. Our Charmilles Roboform 350 machine combines high-speed finishing, and micro and automated tool changer capability thus speeding up the production process. Lower electrode wear also keeps down the cost of the product.

Our customer base boasts a variety of highly regarded, blue chip companies in areas as diverse as Defence, Medical & Pharmaceutical, Space and Motorsport. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for a FREE quote today.

How do the Spark Erosion or Die Sink EDM process work?

Spark erosion allows us to achieve intricate details inside components that would, otherwise, be too complex or impossible to obtain with traditional cutting methods. This technique is especially useful for the machining of hard materials such as mould tools or for the removal of broken taps. It also allows for a good surface finish and the drilling of very small and complicated shapes. As there’s no contact between the tool and the piece, intricate sections or weak materials can be worked on without distortion. If materials have a minimum electrical conductivity of 0.01 S/cm, then it’s likely they can be machined with spark erosion. Like Spark erosion, Spark Erosion can be used for applications where adherence to tight tolerances of 0.1 microns is key.

The Applications of Spark Erosion

From life-saving medical devices to the intricate components of aerospace and automotive engineering, the success of many products hinges on the ability to create with complete accuracy. Here’s where spark erosion plays a vital role in manufacturing components that define our technological and industrial landscape…

  • Aerospace Industry

Spark erosion plays a crucial role in manufacturing intricate parts for aircraft and spacecraft. From cutting complex engine components to crafting delicate, lightweight parts for satellite systems, spark erosion ensures that every piece meets the stringent standards demanded by the aerospace sector. Its non-contact cutting method minimises the risk of material stress, providing components that can withstand the rigours of space exploration.

  • Medical Devices

Within the medical field, spark erosion is instrumental in crafting precision components for devices like pacemakers and surgical instruments. These life-saving devices rely on the utmost precision, and spark erosion is the technology that guarantees the intricate, perfectly crafted parts needed for their operation. From tiny springs in medical devices to complex surgical tooling, spark erosion is at the forefront of medical device innovation.

  • Tool and Die Making

It is an essential technology for creating moulds, dies, and tooling used in manufacturing. Tool and die makers rely on spark erosion to craft the moulds that give form to countless consumer and industrial products. From intricate plastic injection moulds to precision dies for metal stamping, spark erosion’s ability to create complex shapes with fine details ensures the quality and reliability of manufactured goods.

  • Automotive Industry

Spark erosion is used to produce gears, pistons, and other components that demand high precision and durability. In the automotive industry, precision and reliability are paramount. Spark erosion helps craft the vital components that power vehicles, from precise gear teeth in transmissions to the intricacies of fuel injection systems. Its ability to maintain the structural integrity of materials ensures the durability of automotive parts.

  • Electronics Manufacturing

It is pivotal in producing tiny, complex parts for electronics and semiconductors. As the electronics industry continues to shrink in size and expand in complexity, spark erosion becomes increasingly vital. It creates tiny, intricate components for microelectronics, semiconductors, and beyond. These minute, precise parts are the building blocks of our digital world, and spark erosion is the tool that makes it possible.

Spark erosion has revolutionised the way we manufacture, allowing for the intricate production of components that underpin important industries. Where modern manufacturing is concerned, spark erosion plays an essential role, turning imagination into reality with unparalleled precision.

What are the benefits of Spark Erosion or Die Sink EDM?

  • Difficult-to-Machine Materials

Spark erosion allows us to achieve intricate details inside components that would, otherwise, be too complex or impossible to obtain with traditional cutting methods. The process is accurate and won’t compromise the surface finish of the resulting products.

  • Quality Finishes

As it is a non-contact manufacturing process, spark erosion achieves high-quality finishes. This means that the need for post-processing procedures and surface treatments will be greatly reduced.

  • Quick Turnaround

Our machinery can run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing for quick turnaround times. Furthermore, our Charmilles Roboform 350 machine combines high-speed finishing, and micro and automated tool changer capability thus speeding up the production process.

  • Accuracy

Our state-of-the-art machinery and automated software allow us to produce intricate, complex parts where a high degree of accuracy is required. Furthermore, our results are predictable and repeatable during every production run.

  • Tight Tolerances

We work with a range of industries where tight tolerances are essential. Like Spark erosion, Spark Erosion can be used for applications where adherence to tight tolerances of 0.1 microns is key.
