    What is EDM manufacturing?

Electrical discharge machining (EDM manufacturing) is a process that uses electrical sparks to cut into metal. We provide EDM manufacturing to high-profile industries such as Defence, Medical & Pharmaceutical, Space, Motorsport and more! There are several types of EDM manufacturing…

    Wire EDM Manufacturing

Wire EDM manufacturing uses a wire as the tool electrode. This method stops the material from eroding from the wire itself by continually switching. Wire EDM manufacturing is a process that is particularly suited to tough materials such as Inconel and hardened tool steels.

How does Wire EDM manufacturing work?

Where the quality of finish is important, Wire EDM manufacturing machinery makes minuscule cuts or ‘skims’ of the part to remove microns of material at a time. This technique is particularly useful for the manufacture of intricate, complex parts where a high degree of accuracy is required.

    Micro Precision EDM Manufacturing

Using a micro ‘fine’ wire as the tool, Micro Precision EDM manufacturing is suited to tough materials such as Inconel and hardened tool steels. Additionally, it can be used to cut parts made from tungsten carbide, titanium, aluminium, copper and other more exotic alloys as long as the material is electrically conductive.

    Spark Erosion/Die Sink EDM Manufacturing

Spark erosion is where an electric spark between 8,000-12,000 °C is created between an electrode and the workpiece. This effectively vaporises the material to create the required design. Our Charmilles Roboform 350 machine combines high-speed finishing, and micro and automated tool changer capability thus speeding up the production process. Lower electrode wear also keeps down the cost of the product.

    Our State-of-the-Art EDM Manufacturing Machinery

Our GF machinery CUT 1000 machines are a benchmark in microwire erosion. Using wires of 20 μm, surface finishes of Ra 0.05 μm, 11 μm inside radii, 22 μm slits are now achievable. Production of both small and high-volume batches of components means that EDM manufacturing is of real benefit in the manufacture of several technologies such as medical components, automotive, aerospace and more.

What are the benefits of EDM manufacturing?

    Difficult-to-Machine Materials

If you have difficult-to-machine or tough materials such as Inconel and hardened tool steels, EDM manufacturing is the solution. The process boasts fine attention to detail and doesn’t compromise the surface finish of the resulting products.

    Quality Finishes

EDM manufacturing can achieve high-quality finishes as it is a non-contact manufacturing process. This means that the need for post-processing procedures and surface treatments will be greatly reduced.

    Quick Turnaround

Our machinery can run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing for very competitive pricing and quick turnaround times. Whether you require small or high-volume batch work, one-off products or prototypes, we can help with it all.

    Accuracy

Our high-performance machinery and automated software allow us to produce intricate, complex parts where a high degree of accuracy is required. Furthermore, our results are predictable and repeatable during every production run.

    Tight Tolerances

We work with a range of industries where tight tolerances are essential. Our EDM manufacturing machinery can accommodate intricate, complex parts, down to 20 microns in size with tolerances of less than 3 microns.
