What is Micro Precision EDM Machining?
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a manufacturing process that uses electrical discharges to cut into metal to create a desired shape and detach it from the metal sheet. When this process uses a micro ‘fine’ wire as the tool, it becomes Micro Precision EDM Machining. This process is particularly suited to tough materials such as Inconel and hardened tool steels. It can also be used to cut parts made from tungsten carbide, titanium, aluminium, copper and other more exotic alloys providing that the material is electrically conductive.
How does Micro Precision EDM Machining work?
Micro Precision EDM Machining operates by generating an electrical discharge between a conductive material and the workpiece. When brought in proximity with the workpiece and applied with a voltage the electrode, typically made of conductive materials like graphite or copper, will remove material from the workpiece. The electrode never makes physical contact with the material, ensuring a meticulous and accurate process.
Our State-of-the-Art Machinery
Our two GF machinery CUT 1000 machines are specifically designed to meet micro ‘fine’ wire EDM demands in terms of precision, productivity predictability and repeatability of machining results. They are a benchmark in micro-wire erosion. Using wires of 20 μm, surface finishes of Ra 0.05 μm, 11 μm inside radii, 22 μm slits are now achievable. Production of both small and high-volume batches of components means that Micro EDM technology is of real benefit in the manufacture of connectors, medical components, watchmaking, as well as automotive, aerospace and satellite technologies.
With our recently acquired Sarix T1-T4 micro erosion machine SR-HPM we can now offer a micro EDM deep hole drilling service. This device can reach holes of 100 microns with stringent tolerances down to 3-5 microns.

In the automotive industry, Micro Precision EDM Machining is of paramount importance. Vehicle gears, transmission, fuel injection systems and more are manufactured by Micro Precision EDM Machining.
- Electronics Manufacturing
Micro Precision EDM Machining plays an essential role in electronics manufacturing. Often, electrical components are small and complex, sometimes only able to be manufactured using processes such as Micro Precision EDM Machining.
Micro Precision EDM Machining is key in manufacturing a range of intricate components at the heart of many industries. So, now that we’ve explored what Micro Precision EDM Machining is and its applications, what are the benefits of Micro Precision EDM Machining?
What are the benefits of Micro Precision EDM Machining?
As specialists in Micro Precision EDM Machining and precision engineering, we at Microtec have seen the benefits of Micro Precision EDM Machining time and time again. Here are the benefits that Micro Precision EDM Machining delivers…
- Difficult-to-Machine Materials
The process of Micro Precision EDM Machining is particularly suited to difficult-to-machine, tough, materials such as Inconel and hardened tool steels. The process is accurate and won’t compromise the surface finish of the resulting products. Its versatility makes it a preferred choice in industries where material diversity is a constant challenge, providing an all-round solution for precision engineering.
- Minimal Stress Products
Traditional machining methods may require contact between the workpiece and the tool, therefore causing tool wear. As it is a non-contact manufacturing process, Micro Precision EDM Machining achieves high-quality finishes. This means that the need for post-processing procedures and surface treatments will be greatly reduced. This process also reduces operational costs by prolonging the life of cutting tools.
- Quick Turnaround
Our Micro Precision EDM machinery can run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing for very competitive pricing and quick turnaround times. Whether you require small or high-volume batch work, one-off products or prototypes, we can help with it all. Whichever industry you require Micro Precision EDM Machining for, we ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget every time.
- Accuracy
Our state-of-the-art machinery and automated software allow us to produce intricate, complex parts where a high degree of accuracy is required. We understand the importance of accuracy in our field and boast tight tolerances, uniform finishes and adherence to specifications every single time. Furthermore, our results are predictable and repeatable during every production run.
- Tight Tolerances
We work with a range of industries where tight tolerances are not just needed but are essential. We understand the importance of tight tolerances and know that even the smallest deviation can be detrimental, and even dangerous for a range of environments. As such, our machinery can accommodate intricate, complex parts, and can reach holes of 100 microns with stringent tolerances down to +/-5 microns with little room for error.
- Mass Production
As it is a digital process, Micro Precision EDM Machining is highly efficient for mass production. Information can be programmed into the machinery to ensure that all specifications and requirements are adhered to throughout the entire process. This meticulous process maintains consistency and precision that may otherwise be lost across large batches.
With these outstanding benefits, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t consider Micro Precision EDM Machining for your next manufacturing project. So, if you’re ready to take the step and work with Microtec for Micro Precision EDM Machining, how does the process work?
